Doctor evaluates each patient by sonogram and pelvic examination. The procedure is performed with an I.V. combination of Fentanyl and Versed that will induce a "twilight type sedation". These medications are extremely effective for pain management with much less risk than general anesthesia with intubation. Patients are monitored under pulse oximetry and rest in the recovery area for approximately thirty minutes hour.An ultrasound and examination will be performed to confirm the pregnancy.
Anesthetic: You will receive an intravenous injection (of Fentanyl and Versed), and a paracervical block (local anesthetic around the cervix). These medications will induce a mild "twilight sleep". You will be very relaxed. 95% of patients may not remember the procedure at all.
The Procedure
This procedure is called a D&A (dilation and aspiration). This involves dilating the cervix and aspirating (suctioning) the uterus. The D&A procedure will take 4 to 5 minutes.
You will complete all your paperwork and lab tests, have an ultrasound and be examined by the doctor. If needed, a Laminaria, small match-like objects, will be inserted into the cervical canal which will slowly and carefully soften and dilate it over a 1-4 hour period. The doctor will administer the anesthetics mentioned above and complete a D&E (dilation and evacuation) procedure.
Recovery: You will rest in our recovery room for 30 minutes or longer if necessary where your vital signs will be monitored by our nursing staff. You will be given a package of birth control pills naprosyn for pain relief , doxycycline to prevent infection and a prescription for 3 months of contraception (if you wish to use this method of birth control) and their use will be thoroughly explained. When you are sufficiently awake, you will be discharged from the recovery area.
What to Expect Afterward: You may have some cramping, not unlike what you would have with your period. You may also have a discharge that could last up to two weeks. You should be able to resume most normal activities, including bathing, almost immediately, but you should not use tampons, douche or have intercourse for two weeks.
Your Follow-Up Visit. Our fees include a three-week checkup. This exam is important to determine that everything is back to normal and to give you an opportunity to discuss future birth control and have your questions answered. For an additional $100 fee, you may have a complete checkup and PAP smear and receive a twelve-month prescription for your pills.
We take great pride in the special care our patients receive, and are available to answer your questions.
